Robert "Bob" Douglas Enochs

June 16, 1946 - August 23, 2022

Lincoln and Barefoot Bay, FL - Robert "Bob" Enochs passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 23, at the age of 76. Bob was born and raised in Lincoln, ME, and graduated from Mattanawcook Academy in 1964.

As a successful entrepreneur, Bob was fearless in launching new ventures and saw them through to success with hard work and tenacity. He never hesitated to share his knowledge and experience to help others get ahead. A few of his most recognizable businesses in the Lincoln area include the Waterfront Event Center, Lincoln House Motel, Lincoln Trading and Pawn and Timberhouse Restaurant.

Despite all his hard work, Bob always found time to enjoy many activities offered by the great state of Maine such as hunting, fishing, A.T.V, boating and playing cribbage, to name a few. At mid-life he earned a pilot's license and proudly owned a Cessna float plane. He made trips to camps in Quebec, Scraggly Lake, and many other places. He loved to treat people to rides, as it was his passion. He was known to fly to the coast to pick up fresh lobsters for gatherings at the lake.

Bob also was a member of Horeb Lodge #93 for 31 years and served in the Army National Guard for six years.Entertaining friends and family was always a priority for Bob. He welcomed visitors with a warm greeting that definitely included the immediate offer of a cocktail of their choice. He entertained so many people wherever he went. Family and friends have many warm memories of the good times at his homes at Cold Stream Pond and Barefoot Bay, FL.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, Don and Eleanor Enochs. He is survived by his wife, Beth Enochs; children, William Enochs, Linda and her husband, Jamie Arnold, Donnie and his wife, Sheila Enochs; and stepchildren, Devan Knott, Jordan Knott, Kamryn Knott, Hayden Weatherbee and Ardyn Weatherbee. He is also survived by his sisters, Elaine Enochs and her husband, Larry Kuusela, Mary Jane Norton, and Joann Whitten. He leaves behind six grandchildren, Bradley and Tyler Arnold, Sarah and Mason Enochs, Amelia and James Enochs; as well as three step-grandchildren, Hazen and Theodore Knott, and Harper Weatherbee.

A celebration of life will be held at Gillmor's Restaurant on September 19, 2022, at 3 p.m. and a gathering will be held in Barefoot Bay, FL, on October 29, 2022.

A Tangle

Recently, Jeanni Worster mentioned something about a tangle in relation to genealogy. Mine or hers? I don’t recall. It doesn’t really matter. I replied that “tangle” was a good word.

“Oh, what a tangled web we weave.”

Jewelry tangles in a jewelry box.

Threads tangle in my crochet bag.

And yes, lines in a genealogy tangle.

This tangle involves an in-law that descends from many times Grand-Uncle Stephen, son of Francis Holmes. His name is Israel Smith, and you don’t need to worry about who he is unless you want to, just the mess I found in our family tree and how I figured it out. With a name like Smith, you can imagine it’s difficult to keep them straight.

Here’s the lineage for anyone who might want it.

Israel Smith married two wives. Wife number 1 was Abigail Holly.

Abigail Holly – Elisha Holly and Rebecca Bishop – Elisha Holly and Martha Holmes – Stephen Holmes and Martha MNU – Francis Holmes.

Wife number 2 was Deborah Holmes. Really? Oh wow. Which Deborah Holmes? Not quite as challenging as Smith, but, as I read somewhere, Holmeses were thick on the ground. I mentioned last week that I couldn’t figure her out, but I went to Annmarie’s tree and there she was and she checked out.

Deborah Holmes – John Holmes and Rebecca Bell – John Holmes and Mercy Bell – Stephen Holmes and Martha MNU – Francis Holmes.

To further tangle this web: Rebecca Bell – Jonathan Bell and Deborah Ferris (m. 1702) – Jonathan Bell and Mercy Crane (m. 1662) – Francis Bell and Rebecca MNU.

Mercy Bell – Jonathan Bell and Susanna Pierson m 1672 – Jonathan Bell and Mercy Crane – Francis Bell and Rebecca MNU.

I must unravel this tangle. I am trying to follow a consecutive order, but those Bells in Deborah Holmes’ genealogy keep ringing in my head. I needed to sort that out, but only in the morning when my head might be clearer. I got up and made a chart.

ALWAYS MAKE A CHART WHEN YOU HAVE A TANGLE. My chart revealed that I didn’t have a tangle at all. (Click to enlarge.)

I reviewed all my information about the Bells, and I am convinced that Deborah Holmes only had one grandfather. On each side of her family, she had the same grandfather but a different grandmother. I have never seen this. I ran it by Annmarie, but she wasn’t nearly as impressed as I was, as she has encountered it in her tree several times. The Bells had a tangle; not me.

By the time we get to the fifth generation, she should have 31 different people. You can subtract three.

Now, back to Israel Smith with his two wives and allegedly eight children. Did I have the right Israel Smith? There were several in Connecticut and New York. One had a wife, Sarah? Did our Israel marry again? No, he did not.

I set that Israel aside and looked at the Israel of Pound Ridge, Westchester, NY, who left, in his will, a wife Deborah and eight children. How could I find a connection, untangle my wonders, and firmly set this clasp? I looked at all eight children, but found nothing to connect this Israel and Deborah of Pound Ridge to Israel and Deborah of Stamford. But, I did fine one small detail: the man he chose as the co-executor of his will – his brother, Ebenezer Lockwood.

Why did Smith have a brother named Lockwood? That was my trigger. I remembered reading somewhere that often, back in those days, people didn’t refer to in-laws as in-laws that often; they were simply family members. Scratched my head. Did Israel have a sister who might have married an Ebenezer Lockwood?

Yes, he did! Ezra Smith married Mary Weed and they had at least two children: Israel and Hannah, born nine years apart. Hannah married Ebenezer Lockwood – making him Israel’s brother-in-law and co-executor with Deborah Holmes Smith, wife of Ezra, who was the son of Ezra and Mary; whilst Ebenezer was the son-in-law of Ezra and Mary.

Whew. Wasn’t that fun. Did I lose you? Are your thoughts all tangled up? Here is my diagram that confirms the relationship.

I took a whole day away from genealogy as Bill and I car-toured the Fundy Park Trailway. It’s a driving trail (and a several days hiking trail if you are so inclined; Julie has hiked it). There are stops along the way where you can get out and take a short (or not so short) hike to a lookout at the magnificent Bay of Fundy.

I chatted with Annmarie about several topics and sent her the link to the Stamford Town Records – I trust that will keep her busy for a while. The probate records are there as well. She sent me to a little booklet about Stamford stories and a legend or two, titled “Stamford Historical Sketches.” Some of them I had read, but not all. I found the names of several places that have changed, and I wondered about them. There is no index at the end, but there is a timeline.
